The Pot Vaudois:

A bottle with a story to pour

You pour a glass of Chasselas. But before the wine hits the rim, the bottle has already told you something: this wine comes from Vaud. Not from anywhere else.

The Pot Vaudois isn’t just a container. It’s a piece of wine history. It’s shape, weight, and presence all point to a very specific story—and that story is finally being poured again.

A bottle shaped by time

Back in 1822, the canton of Vaud put its wine measures into law:

  • Pot — 1.4L
  • Demi-Pot — 0.7L (a standard size of a bottle of wine in the canton of Vaud)
  • Picholette — 0.35L

It was more than legislation. These were visual, tactile cues that told drinkers what they were being served. And for over half a century, the bottles that held Vaud’s wines kept their form.

But then came standardisation. Industrial glassmaking. And the litre. The old shapes disappeared. Vaud’s bottles were replaced with efficient ones—less character, more conformity.

Fast-forward to today: the Pot Vaudois is back

Thanks to the team at the Musée Vaudois de la Vigne et du Vin in Aigle, original bottle forms from the 1800s were preserved, studied, and finally revived. The Pot was first reintroduced in 1998. Now the Demi-Pot and Picholette are available too.

These aren’t nostalgic replicas. They’re made to be used. By real winemakers. For real wine. Right here in Vaud.

Why shape still matters

There’s something about pouring from a Pot Vaudois that changes the experience. It’s heavier. It’s generous. It demands to be noticed.

The truth is, Vaud wines are often under-the-radar—even within Switzerland. And part of that is visual. When every bottle looks the same, how do you tell a story without words?

The Pot Vaudois is that story. Its design is an identity. Its glass is geography.

This isn’t a free-for-all. Only wines that meet strict standards can be bottled in these forms:

  • Must be AOC Vaudois
  • Must be vintage wines
  • Must be bottled in the canton of Vaud

There’s a kind of integrity in that. It keeps the bottle tied to its origins. It means something.

Where to see one, taste one, take one home

You’ll find these bottles in tasting rooms around Lavaux, or at the Musée Vaudois itself. (And if you’re like us, you’ll want to pick one up and run your hands along the glass before you even ask what’s inside.)

This isn’t about marketing. It’s not about standing out on a shelf. The return of the Pot Vaudois is something quieter, something more rooted.

It’s about remembering that wine isn’t just what we drink—it’s how we share it.

And sometimes, a bottle really can say where it comes from. Without saying a word.

They... read more were all excellent and we enjoyed the views of the region. Then, we walked to our next stop for lunch. Jenn brought a beautiful and delicious spread for lunch: cheeses, meats, nuts, tomatoes, bread, figs, and wine. In addition, the most amazing combination of crackers, cheese, smoked trout, and pickled onions. It was a delicious combination! Then, we walked quite a bit further (thankfully mostly downhill). We stopped along the way to learn about the region, vintners, and their process using a wine cart monorail. We made one more pit stop for another tasting before walking through vineyards, by a waterfall, and then ended in the last location for a final tasting where there were lots of purchasing options. Overall, we had a great day and loved our time on the tour! Jenn was so nice and passionate about the wine, people, and history of this region!

We had a fantastic time with Jennifer from Edible Switzerland and it was... read more such a unique experience! We went to two vineyards on this tour - Domaine Ducret and Domaine Neyroud-Fonjallaz. We are from the U.S. and the vineyard experiences are much different there - the ones in Chardonne/Lavaux are much smaller and more private - most winemaking families live on the properties where the wine is made (and many have lived there for multiple generations!). They were happy to have visitors, show us around their wine-making areas, and do wine-tastings for us, but you have to book these tours and tastings in advance, which is where Jennifer came in. I would have had no idea how to book/contact the vineyards. It was also great to have a translator, as most of the winemakers spoke some English, but not with complete fluency. Jennifer is fluent in both English and French (the main language spoken in this area). The views in Lavaux are so incredible! Even in the winter when we went (November 2023). My husband also loved this experience and the wine, and he is typically not much of a wine drinker. 10/10 overall for views, wine, and experience, and not something that would have been a feasible activity for us being from a different country without utilizing Jennifer as a planner, tour guide, and translator. Highly, highly recommend!

    Jen planned an amazing day for us in Lavaux wine country. She's very thoughtful in her organizing, providing many options to choose from based in type of hike desired, locations,... read more etc. She's very communicative leading up to the day, and making sure you are armed with the right directions to get to the meeting place and back to your hotel. Walking within the vineyards was such a cool experience, as well as being able to take in such beautiful views and scenery. The wineries are also very "hidden" in little villages, so I don't know how easy it'd be to find them on your own. Also, I know we went to more unique ones off the tourist trail. The wineries are family owned and its a totally different experience visiting them versus US wineries. Definitely bring a sturdy bag or backpack because the wine is so good you'll want to buy some! And like us you'll probably buy at the first winery too (or maybe all) Jen is also super knowledgeable, very interested in food and wine, learning and sharing info about the region. She really enjoys what she does! She gave us lots of recommendations for Lausanne and other parts of Switzerland, and all over the world based on our groups travel plans. We really had such a fun day and if we're back in the area will look her up again! Reach out to her if you will be in the area and like wine, Swiss wine is very unique! You won't regret it.

    We spent an afternoon with Jen last week, hiking the Lavaux wine region and tasting as we walked. She was wonderful from the first contact, willing to work with us... read more regarding time, level of difficulty, what types of wines we were most interested in, and which wineries she thought would interest us. She prepared a very detailed and elaborate presentation just for us, including history and development of the region, in depth discussion of the wines and their peculiarities, suggestions of where we could visit on our own, and suggestions for other things to do during our stay. Her narration as we hiked was very interesting and she was warm and fun to be with. She also prepared a picnic lunch and brought a grand cru wine for us to drink with it. We had a perfect day and would highly recommend Jen and Edible Switzerland for any activity you’d like to try!
